Are you trying to decide whether a residential solar system is right for your household? As one of the easiest ways to adopt a green lifestyle, solar panels come with great cost-saving benefits. However, as they come with a significant upfront cost it’s normal to want to know how they’ll power your property. At Arise Solar, we’re more than happy to answer all your questions. Here’s our basic guide:
Residential solar systems draw energy from the sun to complement your mains power
In many cases, a residential solar system won’t replace your normal electricity supply entirely. Instead, it will draw energy from the sun and form the bulk of your electricity instead.
For example, if your property is small enough to benefit from a 5 kW system, it will do the following:
- On a sunny or overcast day, the sun’s rays will penetrate the solar system’s panels to generate DC electricity.
- That DC electricity will then convert to usable AC via the solar system’s inverter.
- In most cases, you’ll use all the energy and your main grid supply will make up the shortfall using normal electricity.
- If you do have spare energy, it will feed back into the main supply for use elsewhere.
As you may have already guessed, living in a sunnier area means you stand a stronger chance of generating enough electricity to power your property. For example, while Hobart receives five to six sunshine hours per day, Port Hedland benefits from nine to 10. Even if you do live in a lower sunshine hour area, you’ll still make significant savings on your energy bill.
The quality of your electricity will remain the same
It’s important not to assume that renewable energy means you’re receiving a service that’s of lower quality. Once the panels convert UV rays into DC and the inverter converts DC power into AC, the energy it produces is in its most basic form. Because of this, it doesn’t matter where it comes from, because it will perform the same function as your mains supply. Residential solar systems are now so dependable you can install panels with a 10 kW supply.
Maintaining residential solar systems requires little maintenance
Although residential solar systems are still a niche product compared to traditional energy, they require little maintenance.
