AGL is all set to invest $180 million in Torrens Island grid-scale battery. AGL has appointed technology group Wärtsilä to construct the $180 million, 250MW Torrens Island grid-scale battery in South Australia. The inverters will be supplied by German company SMA Solar technology (SMA is in our MOST RECOMMENDED INVERTER LIST, ask our experts now) and the battery will be supplied by Finnish technology company Wartsila. The construction of the project shall complete by early 2023. Arise Solar can help you install quality systems with German Technology at your property. Get in touch with our experts to learn more.
Difference between Grid forming and Grid following
The system to be installed will initially operate on grid-following mode and will later be switched to grid-forming mode. Let’s look at a simple explanation through an image sourced from PV Magazine.

Early this year in July AGL joined the green side by setting new standards and offering its customer a carbon neutral option on all its electricity plans. It is taking a step forward to support the energy sector’s transition to clean energy and now AGL is set to get a 250 megawatt (MW) grid battery – the first of a planned 850 MW national battery rolling-out.
AGL’s Chief Operating Officer, Marcus Brokhof, said in a statement, “Torrance Island has played an important role in the state’s energy generation for many decades, and our plans ensure that the site’s legacy continues with smart and sustainable technologies.
Brokhof told RenewEconomy in an interview that one hour batteries were the most viable in the grid at the moment, although that would change as more coal and gas generators left the grid and as battery costs continued to fall. Further they concluded that a 1-hour battery would be most viable in the short term, the revenue model shows that you can extract utmost value in a one hour battery.
