Australian scientists have set a new world record for the efficiency for double-sided solar cells that they say could be the key to boosting the energy output of future solar farms. The research team successively achieved a conversion efficiency on the front side of solar cells of 24.3 %, as well as a conversion efficiency of 23.4 % on the cell’s rear side. What are bifacial solar modules?
As the name suggests bi meaning two; bifacial panels produce solar power from both sides of the panel. Researchers claim that bifacial solar modules increase the overall efficiency of solar panels by 30%. Just like normal PERC panels, bifacial panels come in various designs. Some use polycrystalline cells and most use monocrystalline cells. A few bifacial solar modules come in dual glass and others in clear backsheets. Principal Investigator, Dr Kean Chern Fong from the ANU says “Bifacial solar cells are becoming increasingly important in the roll-out of solar farms and are expected to have a market share of over 50 per cent in the next five years”
